The "Surprise" Video, Part Three
David : "Umm .. somebody writes .. ummm ... I think we covered that .. umm .. we covered .. Where did the song come from? The Ally McBeal song. Have you ever been in any Broadway or Westend productions?"
Josh : "Mmm .. That's a really good question. Because I know a lot of people have written in saying you remind me of Michael Crawford or you remind me of [name unclear]."
David : "Yeah that was another question here."
Josh : "Yeah right umm .. Broadway was kinda my first .. one of my very very first goals. Umm .. I .. I studdied musical theatre at Carnegie Mellon University which is a great .. great institution. And uhh .. umm and I went to LA County High School for the Arts .. for drama and things like that. And thats kind of where I wanted to go for a large part of my life. Umm .. and uhh .. I have not been on Broadway. I have not been in any Westend productions. The only theatre I've done had been high school stuff. And uhh .. I kind of knew .. it was the sign of things to come when I had to leave one of my rehearsals to go .."
David : "To a packed in event. Yeah."
Josh : "To the grammies actually .."
David : "Yeah."
Josh : ".. well the rehearsal so .. so yeah .. this is .. you never .. you never know which way your life is gonna lead and which .. which path you're gonna take and .. and this is one that .. this is kind of a new dream for me .. and a new goal that I never thought I could .. uhh never thought I could reach .. but we got there .. and hopefully one day I will do the right thing on Broadway and do something down .. down the road."
David : "Mmm Hmm .. Umm somebody else writes .. "
Josh : " I also want to say that David is writing an amazing musical called scream .."
David : "Right."
Josh : "..that is hopefully on it's way to Broadway."
David : "Well .. we hope."
Josh : "And uhh .. and hopefully you guys will be hearing it."
David : "By the time it gets there you will be an old man."
Josh : "I will be an old man."
David : "The way it's going. It's a hard process."
Josh : "Yeah it's uhh really hard processing theatre. And uhh and for some you know .. we spend the full time in the theatre .. so."
David : "This is a realy important question alright .. I know the answer to this too but don't know quite how to answer it so you should."
Josh : "Ok."
David : "Will you tour?"
Josh : "Will I tour? Very good question. and uhh .. yes. I mean well .. I will definitely tour .. because I can't wait to perform new songs live around the country and around the world. Umm .. we're not quite sure when that's gonna happen yet. We're looking at possibly spring and uhh as I travel will be different events and different tv shows. I'm sure I'll be stopping in your neck of the woods but uhh .. we'll .. we'll see .. we'll definitely see."
David : "Yeah it .. umm .. actually maybe some of the fans .. on errr .. your .. yeah their our fans .. I'm a fan too .."
Josh : "Ok."
David : ".. could write in and talk to uis about this because we're a little bit torn about the touring thing because we both .. we both kind of are on the same page but maybe a little bit different. I think that Josh umm .. should not .. although I love orchestra and I love symphony in his album .. it certainly displays a lot of that but I think it should be elevated a little. I think it should be some symphony there and whenever possible of course .. but also we love the idea of a young rhythm section just taking it up a notch so that you uhh .. you know like in a Bocelli concert for instance you can talk pleasantly like this when the loudest point is playing."
Josh : "Correct."
David : "I think we're gonna be a little bit more rock-n-roll than that I think .."
Josh : "You're gonna have to scream. No .. like the musical."
David : "Yeah. right .. but I mean .. am I right? I mean I think you're gonna .. you know I want you to play some drums .."
Josh : "Yeah."
David : ".. not I want .. it's gonna be your choice."
Josh : "We wanna make .. the reason .. the reason we're kind of deciding when we're gonna do a tour and what kind of tour we're gonna do is that we wanna make a show that's really really special and we wanna that .. that is worthwhile for you guys to come and see it. It's really different from anything that you've seen. And uhh .. and we don't wanna make it completly you know like he said .. orchestra and singer. You know we really wanna concentrate .."
David : "We want to rock."
Josh : ".. we wanna .. somewhat. Ha Ha Ha. We wanna mix it up. We wanna have different musicians on stage and really kind of experiment like we did on the album you know on tour and kind of come up with a show that's .. that's pretty unique. So."
David : "So let us know what you think."
Josh : "Like the album it will take a little while to figure out but we will do it."
David : "Umm .. What is You're Still You about?"
Josh : "You're Still You .. is .. it has so many meanings. And uhh .. I think a lot of you guys out there got the meaning of it. It's umm .. of course it was used in Ally McBeal to represent lot's of things. One you know uhh .. the character of Ally. She was in a time in her life .. her character .. where she was feeling out of touch with a lot of things .. and the song just reminded her who she was. And it's just a song that kind of reminds everybody of who they really are. And it makes you think hopefully about what kind of things are important to you. Uhh and even people who are kind of down and out of luck .. and the song was generally speaking about soemone who .."
David : "That's what it was written about. For the movie."
Josh : "It was written for the movie Melana. And uhh .. it was kind of written as a boy who falls .. falls in love with ..."
David : "A discarded woman."
Josh : ".. a discarded woman .. saying you know .. even though the community is kind of .. pushing you out of their sight .. you know .. I still .. I still think you are the most amazing person ever. And to me .. in my eyes .. you're still you. So .."
David : "Mmm Hmm."
Josh : "So yeah .."
David : "exactly."
Josh : ".. I think everybody's got something in their lives."
David : "Well look I think we've about covered this. Did you have a couple of questions for me or umm .."
Josh : "I do .. from .. from .. from fans."
David : "Ahh."
Josh : "Yeah. Umm .."
David : "Tell me how we doing by the way guys? How .. you can .. you can talk .. You can speak .. it's .. it's loose. It's a party. But I mean .. is this .. are we able to download all this .. can you download 20 minutes?"
Josh : "If it's streaming you can stream as long as you want."
David : "Really .. so your just gonna go."
[someone off screen said something the microphone did not pick up clear enough to transcribe. Josh replied to them.]
Josh : It's not .. they don't have to put it all .. actually on their hard drive."
David : "Oh great."
[Josh got up out of his chair as he said..]
Josh : "Uhhhmmm .. let me just .. just one second real quick."
[sitting back down]
Josh : "Which one .. which ones do you think we should read?"
David : "Just read a couple of them."
Josh : "Ok."
David : "But don't block my face with your .."
[David pushed Josh's notes page down as he said that.]
Josh : "I know .. yeah.."
Female voice off camera : "This question that I asked?"
David : "Yeah right."
Josh : "Uhhh ..."
[David runs his fingers over his neck and chin and thinks of the following.]
David : "Ohh I loved this .. somebody wrote and said I should have shaved before the Larry King show. That was pretty good.
Josh : "Oh yeah ha ha ha ha right. Umm .. ok .. umm .. someone said uhh .. there's kind of two questions here that are kind of the same. What is it like to work with someone young with that kind of voice? .."
David : "Mmm Hmm."
Josh : ".. Uhhh .. and kind of the same question .. Uhh .. how is .. how is working with someone like myself different .. than working with a vocalist such as Celine Dion or Pop?"
David : "Ummm .. I was just thinking .."
Josh : "Or a friend .."
David : ".. no I was just thinking about Celine .. because I've actually had a .. pretty much a career of working with women."
Josh : "Yeah I know .. yeah."
David : "Umm you know Celine and Whitney Houston and Natalie Cole and Toni Braxton and Monica."
Josh : "Quite a few there."
David : "Yeah .. and umm guys .. well .. Chicago .. was ..."
Josh : "Chicago .."
David : "Peter Cetera, great singer .. and Michael Bolton .. I worked with.."
Josh : "Michael Bolton and Michael Jackson a couple times."
David : "Yeah but umm .. I will confess something that .. to me .. this .. of course it's totally Josh's album .. but I .. when I'm doing a vocal .. whether it's with Josh or Celine .. whoever.. and their in the vocal booth .. and I'm here comping the vocal .. I am the singer. Have we ever talked about this?"
Josh : "Oh yeah absolutely."
David : "Because I .. they sing it eight times. They sing it eight different ways .. and I get to pick which of those eight ways I want on any given word .. line .. phrase or whatever. And with someone like Josh or Celine of course they can sing a song down once and it's near flawless. But then that extra ten percent requires seven more takes .. "
Josh : "Right."
David : ".. so I can piece together little things when I'm not really happy. But I in my mind truly become the singer .. so sometimes in Josh's album I actually think I'm the singer. Which is really kind of sick and twisted and demented. [Josh laughed here] But that's the process."
Josh : "Well for the record he looks at the screen and sees thousands of characters."
David : "Exactly."
Josh : "They know exactly what they want .. and they .. they do it over until the man gets it."
David : "And to answer your question about Josh. I love working with Josh for a ton of reasons .. but one of the .. my favorite reasons is that I can ask him to sing a link and he'll sing the link back to me .. I don't have the voice. I have it up here but I don't have it in the .. the voice. And he can like Celine sing exactly back what I wanna hear which just makes for umm you know .."
Josh : "I try."
David : ".. great .. it's a great process .. we work well together. And I suspect on his next album he'll be .. have a lot more input than he did on his first album because he was just finding his way on his first album."
Josh : "This was all sudden .. and uhh .. I was working with so many amazing people. Umm .. it's been one of the best learning experiences of my entire life. A lot of people aking what was it like to leave college to do this and umm .. and it was .. it was a great sacrifice but I knew .. as soon as we started working that this was going to be a learning experience like no other. And uhh .. and I've learned a lot and hopefully we'll be .. yeah .. I'll have something to put on my CD."
David : "There's uhh .. a ton of .. a ton of things coming up for Josh. It's just like the phones ringing off the hook .. and it becomes a point and a matter of what you say yes and no to at some point .. and your no's become as important as your yes's. And that's kind of the elevated status taht he's hittin right now."
Josh : "Things are very exciting. We've got a lot of great things coming up. And uhh .. including some things that we know about. You know we're definitely gonna do .. "
David : "The Olympics."
Josh : "We're gonna do the Olympics in February. And uhh .. "
David : "That's only a couple billion people though so I wouldn't worry about that."
Josh : "And cold with it .. hahaha."
David : "And it's freezing cold."
Josh : "And it's freezing cold .. it's gonna be one of the harder ones. But it's freezing cold inside tv studios too. People don't realize that when they go inside a tv studio it is so cold and the air is so thin .. it's the worst environment for singers. And uhh .. and .. so yeah but we've got a lot of tv shows coming up .. we've got Leno coming up very soon .. we've got Rosie O'Donnel coming up some time in the near future..."
David : "When is this gonna stream Raul ? Tomorrow."
Raul : "Next week."
David : " Next week ! They can't wait till next week." [Josh laughs]
Raul : "We'll get right on it.
David : "Ok."
Josh : "So .. you guys have already seen Leno .. and uhh .. and uhh .."
David : "Oh that was professional Josh." [Josh laughs]
Josh : "You guys have seen Jay Leno .. "
David : "Umm .. we're gonna close by just playing a couple of tidbits from .. just snippets from two or three songs that did not make the album .. and Josh is there anything in closing .. well actually let's play the music first and umm .."
Josh : "Yeah there's .."
David : "Neal. [Josh laughs] Sorry."
Josh : "That's all right."
David : "Neal. Thank you."
Neal : "Guess we'll pause for a second."
David : "Sure."
[Screen goes blank during the pause, then Dave and Josh come back.]
David : "So I'm close now because we have to talk into the same mic .. because now we want to take a feed from the board and play you a couple things that didn't make thealbum. Just a few little snippets for no reason other than they'll maybe .. I dont know. We'll see if they have a future."
Josh : "Yeah maybe. And these are great songs and uhh .. we're very very proud of them .. but like I said .. for whatever reason they didn't make it on the CD and just for you guys we thought we'd play just a little snippet of what those would uhh .. sound like."
David : "Check it out."
[Transcribers notes : Feed starts Josh is heard singing a clip from the song "Caruso" I give you the translation as well for this below.... and I wish to add my comment that if you see this transcription Josh you have my vote to sing that song .. I think you would do it justice even if you think it's too wordy.]
Josh in Italian : (Translation)
cosi vicini e veri (so close and real)
ti fan scordare le parole (make you forget the words)
o in fondo i tuoi pensieri (and at the back of your mind)
cosi diventa tutto piccolo (everything becomes small)
anche le notti la in America (also the nights there in America)
ti volti e vedi la tua vita (You turn and see your life)
come la scia d'un elica (like the white wash astern)
ma si, e la vita che finisce (But, yes, it is life that ends)
ma lui non ci pensava tanto (and he did not think much about it)
anzi, si sentiva gia felice (on the contrary, he already felt happy)
e ricomincio il suo canto (and continued his song)
[end of song clip.]
David : "That's a little wordy isn't it?"
Josh : "A little wordy .. yeah. [laughs] That was a mouthful."
David : "Go to market get all your groceries .. "
Josh : "Exactly."
David : ".. and come back .."
Josh : "Yeah exactly."
David : "By the way that's Neal behind us. He worked on the whole album too. That's Neal Devor right there."
Josh : "He's our production .. Production Coordinator."
David : "Yeah. Uhh what do you have next there? Oh 'Mia Per Sempre.' That we didn't go on the album right..?"
Josh : "We did another Italian piece called 'Mia Per Sempre' "
David : "I love this song."
Josh : "This is a great song. And we had so many Italian songs on the CD we just thought let's leave this one off for now."
[Transcribers notes : Feed starts Josh is heard singing a clip from the song "Mia Per Sempre." and Mia Per Sempre is not quoted. I immediately skip to the next comment by David Foster.]
David : "And now the Josh Groban Barbra Streisand duet in it's entirety. Hit it Neal. She'd kill us. Look this has been a real lot of fun. Do you have a .. a final message for uhh .. the fans?"
Josh : "Well this is just a big thank you to all of you guys. I mean uhh .. honestly you guys have been amazing. And uhh .. We're .. I'm so proud .. we're both proud to have fans like you guys and to have people so dedicated .. so into the music and so into what we've been trying to do for the last couple of years and umm .. and .. and just thank you and keep it up and hopefully we'll be able to keep you informed on everything and thanks for liking the beanie. [Josh pointed to his hat.]"
David : "Does it come off .. or it stays there..?"
Josh : "No once it's on it never comes off."
David : "OK. Like life. Later."
Josh : "Like life. Bye."
