SA Fans Make Groban Feel Right at Home
The Star
October 11, 2007
South African audiences first noticed him when he outshone the dancing baby in Ally McBeal and then appeared at the Oscars and the closing ceremony for the 2002 Winter Olympics.
When he made it to our local shores, in 2004, he was very well received - no wonder then that Josh Groban is back for more. The 26-year-old singer will tour South Africa in March next year.
Though he may be grounded in the operatic tradition, Groban has gained fame for his interpretation of sweeping ballads and his songs regularly climb the international charts.
His most recent album - Awake (2005) - was completed after his first South African tour and incorporated several African influences, including harmonies from Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
The baritone was one of the top-selling artists in South Africa last year, and this year probably won't be any different with the local release of his next cd - his fourth studio album - on Monday just in time for the Christmas season.
Entitled Noël, it is a collection of festive season tunes ranging from Silent Night to I'll Be Home For Christmas.
Featuring duets with Faith Hill and Brian McKnight and produced by David Foster, this is one cd which will be found in many Christmas stockings this year.
Groban will perform at the Royal Country Club in Durban on March 16, at Bloemfontein's Oliwenhuis Homestead & Estate on March 18, Vergelegen Wine Estate in Cape Town on March 20 and the Coca-Cola Dome Johannesburg on March 26.
Ticket bookings open on Friday at www.ticketconnection.co.za or Mr Price stores.
