Josh Groban/Angélique Kidjo
While it may seem incongruous to pair classical crossover star Josh Groban with Afropop singer Angélique Kidjo, it's a definite win-win for both. The boyishly charming Groban - whose booming baritone moved him from word-of-mouth secret to multi-platinum success story in record time - already had ramped up his creative credibility with his multifaceted third album, Awake, which paired him with everyone from Ladysmith Black Mambazo to Herbie Hancock.
Now, with the electrifying West African-born Kidjo handpicked to open his shows, Groban seems to be teetering on the brink of outright edginess. Kidjo, meanwhile, stands to rake in a multitude of new fans via this mainstream, orchestra-backed stadium tour. The two will share the stage at least once Thursday, dueting on "Pearls," which they perform on her coming guest artist-laden CD, Djin Djin.
Josh Groban, with Angélique Kidjo, at 8 p.m. Thursday, at the Wachovia Center
